  • Fish that is mislabeled. Botox Day Tuesday, August 16.

Mused while glowing over being told this practice is in the top 500 of Allergan, the company that makes Botox, Juvederm, Latisse, Voluma, and now Kybella (see below).

Botox Day is Tuesday August 16 with discounts on Botox and fillers such as Juvederm.  Botox is $13/unit or $195/syringe (normally $16/unit and $240/syringe) and fillers are 10% off.  Voluma is an injectable filler that augments and lifts the cheeks.

When you purchase fish, are you really getting red snapper at a restaurant or store? The group Oceana conducted a large study three years ago to test the authenticity of seafood we buy.  Scientists performed DNA tests on more than 1,200 samples from nearly 700 different stores and restaurants in 21 states.  They found one out of three fish were mislabeled in violation of the FDA.

There are several problems.  The first is that many fish look alike once filleted.  Secondly, more than 90% of our seafood comes from outside the U.S. which makes it hard to trace where it comes from and what fish it is.  Compounding this is the convoluted supply chain.

(Did You Know?   The FDA has found that 85% of fish at the wholesale level is labeled correctly.  Red snapper and grouper are the two fish most often mislabeled.)

What you as a consumer can do to ensure your fish is correctly labeled.  Buy American as fishing is regulated better than elsewhere.  Find a fishmonger you trust or sells fish that have been certified.  Costco and Wal-Mart have tremendous leverage to ensure fish certification.  Lastly, when eating out order whole fish to avoid substitutions.
