    Contact Lens Problems

Mused while watching the Olympic gold medal soccer game between Brazil and Germany while they played Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing in the stadium.  Truly an international world we live in.

Many of us wear contact lens as a convenience over glasses.  I switched when I had accumulated “cheater” glasses in most rooms of the house.  I was also paying for high definition on our televisions but not seeing it.  The problem with contacts (besides getting used to putting them in and taking them out) is that certain behaviors can lead to serious eye infections.

Most ophthalmologists advise against wearing contact lenses while swimming, showering, or sleeping.  About 99% of us who wear contact lenses will do one of these behaviors.  This leads to one-third of all contact lens wearers to seek medical attention.

Bad behaviors can lead to viral, bacterial, or fungal infections.  Scratched corneas are also not uncommon.  Pseudomonas keratitis is a common bacterial eye infection among contact lens wearers.  It is often inflammatory with a sudden onset of redness, pain, tearing and poor vision.

(Did You Know?   There are 41 million Americans who wear contact lenses.)

Besides avoiding bad behaviors, following common sense rules can limit eye infections.  Change contact lens solution in the case daily.  Do not reuse the solution.  Do not use water or saliva to moisten lenses.  Replace your lens container every three months.  Do not try to extend the use of lenses by wearing longer than they are prescribed.
