Last week’s McKenna’s Musings talked about the advantages of chewing gum for dental health. This week we will explore the darker side of a common sweetener in gum called xylitol. To be fair, xylitol is also found in mints, gummy vitamins, toothpaste, specialty peanut butter and melatonin sleep aids. It has about two-thirds the calories of sugar.
Xylitol is deemed safe for humans BUT is 100 times more toxic to dogs than milk chocolate well known to be dangerous for dogs to ingest. Poisoning of the dog can lead to liver failure and death.
(Did You Know? Xylitol is a type of sugar alcohol extracted from plants.)
Education of dog owners is the most effective way of preventing poisoning. Warnings on packaging are not required since it is not toxic to humans. Ice Breakers gum is an example of gum that carries xylitol. Consider checking the ingredients of any of the above products that have artificial sweeteners if you have a dog.
