Is chewing gum good for you? Ancient Greeks, Native Americans, and Mayans all chewed some form of tree sap. In 2007, the American Dental Association gave sugarless gum its Seal of Approval for reducing plaque acids and strengthening tooth enamel. There is not sufficient evidence that it reduces cavities although it reduces bacteria that contribute to cavities. Gum with sugar feeds bacteria which contribute to plaque.

There are a number of artificial sweeteners that give flavor to sugarless gum. These include aspartame, saccharin, sorbitol, mannitol, sucralose and xylitol. Xylitol is being increasingly recommended by dentists. While starting as wood fiber, it adds mineral to tooth enamel and reduces bacteria that cause plaque. There is a dark side to xylitol which I will discuss next week in Chewing Gum Part 2.

(Did You Know? Halloween candy that is sticky or hard should be avoided. Chocolate is better since it washes away more easily, in my opinion, tastes better too!)

Chewing gum after a meal stimulates saliva which reduces the acids caused by bacteria in food. The full anti-bacterial effect occurs after chewing sugarless gum for a minimum of 20 minutes after eating. Of course, nothing takes the place of your toothbrush to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
