A recent article in the journal Contact Dermatitis stated getting tattoos is not without risks. The risks included infections, welling and irritation.

Study co-author Dr. Marie Leger a dermatologist at NYU randomly chose 300 tattooed people in Central Park. They found that about 10% had some complications. However, 6 in 10 of these suffered chronic problems.
Dr. Leger felt that some of the chronic problems are related to the ink. Tattoo inks are not well regulated. (Our inks for permanent makeup are medical grade and closely regulated. We also do testing to ensure our patients are not allergic.) Treatment for these problems includes topical and oral steroids but may ultimately require removal of the tattoo.
