Between the 90 degree weather later this week and the holiday weekend, thoughts turn to cool, relaxation often a pool or the beach. How safe is the beach? The Environmental Protection Agency studied over 54,000 beach goers to study illnesses caused by the beach.
Water was a factor in illnesses. Of those going to the beach 13.5% developed a symptom while swimmers had a 17% incidence. Three-quarters of beachgoers went into the water with 65% immersing their head. 41% got water in their mouth and 18.5% swallowed some water. Goggles were used by 8.7%.

The most common illnesses were gastrointestinal, respiratory infections, ear and eye problem, urinary-tract infections and rash. Ear aches were most common under the age of 5. Of those ill, 15.5% saw a doctor and 3% visited an emergency room. Most used over the counter medicines.
