Recently, there has been a lot of advertising for an FDA-approved device called LifeVac for choking victims. This brings up the question: Is it, or any other anti-choking device, better than the Heimlich Maneuver?
LifeVac is a suction-based device. It has become popular in schools where many chokings occur. Choking is one of the leading causes of pediatric death. LifeVac has donated over 10,000 devices to schools. Over 22 studies show it’s safe and effective. But…
(Did You Know? Dr. Henry Heimlich devised a technique more than 50 years ago to stop people from choking. He was a cardiothoracic surgeon here in Cincinnati. Ironically, the first time he ever used his technique was in his nursing home at age 96, shortly before he died. He was successful in saving a life and indirectly thousands more. I used it once on a surgical colleague, and the back blows enabled him to cough up the nut he was choking on.)
The Heimlich Maneuver is still the gold standard. Medical guidelines show its effectiveness as the primary method of saving a choking victim’s life. The American Red Cross and American Heart Association agree with this. LifeVac is helpful for obese or pregnant women who can’t practically undergo the Heimlich.
The Heimlich Maneuver
First, assess the choking person and confirm they are not able to breathe due to something blocking their airway. If they can cough, let them continue to do it.
Second, give five back blows between their shoulder blades.
Third, make a fist just above their belly button, wrap your other arm around them, grab the fist, and pull up and back. Do this five times.
Lastly, repeat back blows and pulling up and in until the obstructing material is emitted or more help arrives.

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:
High Protein, High-Fiber Chicken Soup
2 Tbls. olive oil
1 onion chopped
6 cloves garlic, minced
½ cup drained, julienned sun-dried tomatoes, chopped
1 can quartered artichoke hearts, drained and chopped
1 can cannellini beans, undrained
8 cups chicken broth
1 tsp. salt
½ tsp. pepper
6 cups kale
1 cup frozen peas
11/2 cups cooked chicken breast (half roasted chicken)
11/2 Tbls. lemon juice (about 1-2 lemons)
¼ cup shredded cheese (Asiago, Parmesan, pecorino Romano)
Heat oil in a saucepan. Cook onion until soft, about 5 minutes, then add garlic and sun-dried tomatoes for another minute. Add artichoke hearts, cannellini beans, chicken broth, salt, and pepper, then bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer for 5 minutes. Add kale and peas, and stir for 2 minutes. Stir in the chicken and lemon juice, then sprinkle with cheese. Combine all and eat.
