Mused after watching the little fella meander to MY backyard, somehow getting through the fence. Although we are keeping Ghost away, he may be making a new friend. He was gone the next day, and a couple of days later I saw him running with his mom. He’s about 15 inches tall and almost comical to see run.

THE HIDDEN TOLL OF CHRONIC STRESS

The economy, gas prices, conflict in Iran, unsafe cities, hot weather, too little rain, too much rain… The list goes on and doesn’t include any of your personal difficulties. We all feel stress, and sometimes it’s hard to see beyond any of it. This takes a toll on us, not only mentally but physically. Here are some of what it does, and an overview of how to deal with it.

Elevated stress hormones over a long period of time can cause a number of problems. Mental health changes from serotonin, which can increase anxiety and depression. Hormones will also elevate heart rate, blood pressure, and strain blood vessels, leading to heart attacks and strokes. This also makes it harder to fall or stay asleep.

Digestive disorders come from heartburn and contribute to stomach pain, bloating, nausea, diarrhea, or constipation.

Muscle tension and pain lead to not only chronic tightness in the shoulders, neck, and head, but can also cause tension or migraine headaches.

Stress can influence appetite and eating habits. There can be an increase in cravings for unhealthy foods, which leads to weight gain. If the appetite is suppressed, unplanned weight loss and fatigue result.

(Did You Know? Developing healthy coping strategies is essential to avoid turning to alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or excessive food.)

An overview of how to manage stress in healthy ways:

    1. Minimize exposure, look for ways to reduce it in your life.
    2. Make healthy dietary choices.
    3. Be physically active.
    4. Get adequate sleep
    5. Stay connected with others. Avoid isolation.
    6. Practice relaxation techniques from breathing, yoga, meditation or massage.
    7. Seek professional help if it persists or interferes with daily life.
    8. Prayer, beliefs, and religion. God always loves you.

Remember, you’re never alone. We’re all in this together.

For the uninitiated like me before last week, Buc-ee’s is the “Disneyland” of gas stations, as was described by an employee to me. Known for their brisket (yes, they make that there daily), jerky, and Beaver Nuggets (caramel corn-like), the inside of the building is as large as some big-box stores. Outside, there are DOZENS of gas pumps (we didn’t even get gas but were impressed). Their bathrooms win national cleanliness awards. It started in Texas about 1982 and has gradually grown to 50+ stations. The one closest is off Interstate 70 just north of Dayton. It took us 45 minutes from the office, going north on I75 just past downtown Dayton, then Route 4/235 north for 11 miles, where it ends at Buc-ee’s. Worth a couple of hours for the WOW factor.
