Nurturing the connections that we make with others adds meaning to our daily lives and spreads joy to those around us.”

GABAPENTIN, WHAT IT’S GOOD FOR AND WHAT IS CONTROVERSIAL

I am prescribing gabapentin more. Why? Not for its well-known help with anxiety or trouble sleeping. We use it to help with post-operative pain relief.

Gabapentin is a prescription drug derived from GABA, a neurotransmitter that’s found naturally in foods such as tomatoes, certain beans, and rice. Gabapentin helps to jump start the production of GABA in the brain, helping you feel more relaxed. This, in general, helps calm overly excited nerves. Hence, helping some surgery patients who have had their nerves disrupted.

(Did You Know? Some science shows that people who eat fermented foods such as yogurt, miso, and kimchi have higher GABA levels. The lactic acid bacteria in those foods might help produce GABA.)

Gabapentin is the fifth most common prescribed drug in the U.S. Again, primarily it is used to calm nerves, but can help with seizures, anxiety, migraines, pain of shingles, pinched nerves, difficulty sleeping, alcohol withdrawal, diabetic neuropathy, fibromyalgia, and those who generally cannot turn their brain off.

The problem lies with two things. One is that gabapentin can cause tinnitus or ringing in the ears. It may also cause dizziness and, rarely, slow one’s breathing. The second caution deals with worsening of pre-existing conditions such as COPD, kidney disease, and several others. Always make sure your physician supervises this med.
