    Dementia Communication Strategies

We assume that if someone who has dementia (this is a very generic term used to describe a condition that has many causes such as Alzheimer’s) that they are no longer capable of speaking for themselves. Those with cognitive impairments are no less than anyone and should be treated with respect. How do we do this?

(Did You Know? Nearly two-thirds of the seven million Americans with Alzheimer’s disease are female.)

Be an active listener. Look directly at them while speaking, nod affirmatively and use other body language to let them know you’re tuning in. Asking if you heard something correctly can be helpful too.
Don’t confront. For example, if they forget to do something don’t call them out on it but rather wait a few minutes and come back to it as if you haven’t talked about it before.
Agree with their reality. Just go with the flow. Again, correcting them will not necessarily change their perceptions.
Remove distractions. Turn off the tv, get kids in another room and do what it takes so that there are minimal other distractions. Multiple stimuli make it hard for someone with cognitive impairment to communicate.
    Use shorter sentences.
    Ask yes or no questions.
Don’t interrupt or assume. Let them finish before responding. Again, summarize what was just said and ask if this is correct.
Write it down. Lists and schedules are important for daily functioning. People with dementia can read.
Use touch. Holding hands can be extremely reassuring to them.
