    WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE

Of course you know hydration is good with the goal of 8-eight ounce glasses or whatever your body is asking for. But there are many types of water and some you need to be wary of since they may not be regulated, have sugars, or don’t have what the label says it has.

    WATER CHOICES:

    Tap water
While it is regulated by the EPA, you know what happened in Flint, Michigan. Consider an in-house filter system.

    Spring Water
According to the FDA, it must be derived from an underground formation from which water flows naturally to the surface. “Glacier water” is runoff from a melting glacier (or should be).

    Mineral Water
Like spring water, it rises to the surface. It differs in that at least 250 parts-per-million must contain dissolved solids such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, and sodium. Flavor profile varies and some are naturally effervescent.

(Did You Know? To make flavored waters at home try adding fruits (citrus, pineapple, berries), cucumbers or herbs like mint, basil and rosemary.)

    Purified Water
Be aware that much of the bottled water we buy is tap water that has been filtered. Distilled water is similarwhich all the natural components have been removed and is not the best choice for humans.

    Electrolyte Water
These have added minerals such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium. These are generally sports drinks or “Pedialyte”. Watch for the amount of sugar in them. Also, they are not normally needed unless significant exercising.

    Flavored Water
Natural or artificial fruit flavors are common. I’m preferential to cucumber and mint combined.

    Sparkling Waters
They are a better choice than sugar-sweetened beverages. The bubbles come from added carbon dioxide. This includes club soda. Seltzers are often enhanced with flavorings.

Remember a reusable water bottle is a better choice for the environment.

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:

Many of you have young children or grandchildren. When my girls were young, we read to them every night. In fact, I still use children’s books as gifts to those who have children. Recently I read an article about a children’s author that interested me. Mo Willems has been published since he won the distinguished Caldecott Medal in 2004. He is currently publishing his 60th children’s picture book. There are several series which allow development and character interactions like the “Elephant and Piggie” series. With the holidays coming, his books may be a consideration.
