It is estimated that 37% of adults cannot swim the length of most recreational pools.  Drowning of those between the ages of 45 to 84 has increased 10% from 1999 to 2010.  Whether out of fear, limited access, or just disinterest many adults miss out on the pleasures of interacting with water and safety that “water competency” provide.  Swimming also has the lure of a low-impact, life-long fitness option.

Despite swimming for almost half a century, I “relearned” how to swim.  After a couple of poor swimming performances in competition, I went to You Tube for instruction.  After weeks of swallowing water and splashing water around like a novice, I became comfortable with my new, efficient swim stroke.

(Did You Know?   The American Red Cross defines “water competency” as being able to enter and exit the water, turn 360 degrees afloat, tread or float for one minute and move through the water for at least 25 yards.)

Beginner adults should expect to learn to swim in about three months.  The basic components of stroke motion, kicking, and rhythmic breathing are not intuitive.  Fortunately, there are more sources to learn to swim than ever before including You Tube.  Beside the Red Cross and YMCA, many community pools and clubs offer lessons.

For more fun and safety in the water, all it takes sometimes is swallowing your pride, and some water.  I’ve been there, twice.
