  • Skin Cancers, Do You Have Unusual Moles?

There are three types of skin cancers.  Basal cell skin cancers are the most common type.  The appearance can be an open sore that heals and then recurs, a reddish patch, a shiny bump, a rolled boarder with an indented center or a scar-like area.  It is usually from sun damage.  The treatment is excision, MOHs excision, or some topical treatments.

Squamous cells are usually from chronic sun damage.  At times there is a precursor called actinic keratosis.  Between 2-10% of these AKs will become a squamous cell.  Treatment for both can be excision or topical treatments like liquid nitrogen, Efudex, chemical peels or lasers.

Melanoma is the bad actor.  Look for the ABCDEs when evaluating skin lesions.  They are Asymmetry, Boarders uneven, Color variety, Diameter greater than an eraser head, and Evolving changing size, shape or color.  Treatment is predominantly surgical based on the thickness of the cancer.

(Did You Know?   If there are skin lesions or moles YOU are concerned about, we recommend seeing your dermatologist or family physician.  If you are uncertain come see us and we can assist you with the appropriate treatment plan.)

Prevention is the key for all skin cancers.  Sunscreens (ours are on sale, see below) that block UVA and UVB are essential and daily application is necessary.  70-80% of UV rays go through the clouds.  Apply sunscreen every couple of hours using a spf of at least 30.  Try to avoid the sun between 10 and 4, sunburns and tanning beds.  Wear hats and clothing to cover susceptible areas.  Have your skin examined yearly by a professional.
