Mused after reading “Instead of…”
Instead of thinking of a diet in terms of which foods to avoid, focus on overall healthy dietary patterns. Instead of thinking of a diet in terms of body weight, think of dietary intake as a key to overall health. Instead of mainly focusing on calories, make healthy food and beverage choices. Instead of relying on supplements, get nutrients from eating a wide variety of healthy foods. Instead of grouping foods by their main components (fats, carbs, protein), remember foods as packages and put together healthy packages.
SWAPPING FOODS FOR A HEALTHIER 2025
Fats
Replace the foods with the highest saturated fatty acids, meat, butter, full-fat dairy and tropical oils with foods higher in unsaturated fats like fish, nuts and seeds, and non-tropical oils like canola or soybean.
Protein
Shift from red meat (beef, pork, lamb and deli meats) to chicken, eggs, fish, and plant sources like beans, lentils, soy, and nuts.
Processed Foods
Minimize processed foods and look for those with the least sodium, sugars and refined flours.
(Did You Know? Quitters’ day is the second Friday in January. Tongue in cheek it spoofs those who are committed to New Years resolutions but don’t last long.)
Grains
Swap refined grain foods for whole grain versions.
Beverages
Swap sugar sweetened beverages for water and unsweetened like sparkling water, tea, coffee (not the dessert kind) and low-fat milk.
Seasoning
Exchange salt for herbs and spices. Herbs (basil, oregano, cilantro), spices (pepper, curry powder), and aromatics (onion, garlic) help cut the amount of salt needed to make food flavorful.

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:
Leftover Ham and Bean Soup
Without buying a whole ham, the deli section usually has chunks of ham usually used for breakfast that can be substituted. Smithfield makes tasty ham.
In a large pot, heat two TBLS. of olive oil. Add one bag of frozen mirepoix (a diced mixture of onion, carrots, and celery purchased in the frozen vegetable section at Krogers). Defrost and warm vegetables for 5-6 minutes. Add three cloves of minced garlic, one pound of ham, 2 bay leaves, and 64 ounces of vegetable or chicken broth or stock. Bring to a boil and lower heat to medium and cook for 30 minutes. Add 19 ounces of canned cannellini beans, 1 tsp. cumin, 1 tsp. thyme, and season with salt and pepper. Continue cooking for another 30 minutes. Remove bay leaves and garnish with parsley. You can also add root vegetables such as diced potatoes, parsnip, turnips, fennel, sweet potatoes, etc.
