Parkinson’s Disease
A famous American was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Former Cleveland Browns quarterback, Bernie Kosar (analogous to Bengal quarterback Ken Anderson) has been diagnosed with the disease.
PD is a progressive disease that causes the loss of brain cells that produce dopamine. Dopamine transmits signals that are for coordination and, movement. The more common manifestations are resting tremors, generalized slowness and rigidity of the limbs. Other motor manifestations can include decreased facial expressions, soft speech and difficulty swallowing. Since dopamine affects other areas of the brain it can cause lightheadedness, constipation, dementia, depression and sleep disturbances.
(Did You Know? Parkinson’s Disease was first described by James Parkinson in 1817!)
There is no cure for PD. There are at least a million Americans that have Parkinsons. The mean age of onset is 60 years old. 5-10% get diagnosed under the age of 40! It is second to only Alzheimer’s Disease as the most common neurodegenerative disease.
The treatment is medication, lifestyle modification and occasionally surgery. Daily exercise, a proper diet and cognitive stimulation help. For more advanced cases, deep brain stimulation may be of assistance.
