HOW PEDIATRICIANS CREATED THE PEANUT ALLERGY EPIDEMIC

The peanut allergy panic began in the 1990s when the media started covering children who died from a peanut allergy and doctors began writing about it. In 1999 researchers found the incidence of peanut allergies in children to be 0.6%. At that time the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) responded by recommending that children between 0 to 3 years of age and pregnant and lactating mothers avoid all peanuts. The U.K health department made a similar recommendation two years earlier.

Despite these recommendations, by 2004 peanut allergies and ER visits skyrocketed. Dr. Gideon Lack, a pediatric allergist in London made the observation that in Isreal, Jewish children were given a peanut snack and that they had one-tenth the rate of peanut allergies compared with Jewish children in the U.K. Despite this, AAP continued the peanut avoidance recommendation.

(Did You Know? By 2019, a report estimated that 1 in every 18 American children had a peanut allergy.)

In 2015, Lack compared one group of infants who were exposed to peanut butter at 4-11 months of age to another group with no peanut exposure. He found that early exposure resulted in an 86% reduction in peanut allergies by the time the children reached age 5 compared with those who had no exposure.

A fairly recent and controversial treatment involves desensitization through oral immunotherapy (OIT). OIT has been successful in about 80-85% of cases. With 80% of patients with peanut allergies never outgrowing the problem, OIT may offer promise.

How it works is by gradually giving patients small amounts of peanut protein orally and letting the body get used to it much like vaccinations. The amounts are gradually increased over a period of months. Once a certain threshold is reached, a maintenance dose of peanut M & M’s are eaten daily.

“When modern medicine issues recommendations based on good scientific studies, it shines. Conversely, when doctors rule by opinion and edict, we have an embarrassing track record.”

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:

    Soup Season

Recently I picked up a bag of bean soup beans from Castle Meats on Loveland-Madiera that Kindervelt uses as a fund raiser. It’s used primarily with a leftover ham bone but can be used just with ham. The instructions, beans and seasoning bag come together.

They recommend adding: ham, can of tomatoes, celery, onions, garlic, chicken bouillon cubes (or chicken stock), kielbasa sausage, chicken breasts, and red wine.

To this I added: corn off the cob, black beans, chickpeas, Calabrian chili, carrots, kale and more tomatoes with green chilis.

The point being, EXPERIMENT with recipes and add things that you have (corn, kale, chickpeas,) as well as things that you like extra (Calabrian chili, tomatoes and green chilis, black beans and carrots). This is easy to do with soups, chili and salads. Give it a go this winter.
