Mused after making sure my American Flag followed flag etiquette on the 4th. One, the flag should never touch the ground. Two, the flag should never be carried flat or horizontally. Three, there should be no marks on the flag. Four, the flag should never be used for anything other than patriotism. Five, the flag can be displayed at night as long as it is illuminated to be discerned as the flag. Lastly, when worn or use is over, it should be burned (which I have done). FITNESS MEANS MORE THAN LOSING WEIGHT
Oftentimes exercise is solely associated or undertaken for the purpose of weight loss. This can be frustrating and even futile. Exercise needs to be thought of as becoming fit more than losing weight. Most studies find that weight loss is 70-80% what you eat and the rest exercise. Even when attempting to decrease the size of fat cells, muscle cells grow and at times negate any potential weight loss.
Focusing on the joy, strength, health benefits and even socializing from exercise can lead to a more sustainable relationship with fitness. Programs or health clubs that have “weight neutral” or “weight-inclusive” allow anyone especially those overweight to be accepted for just exercising. Terms such as toning, sculpting, or shedding pounds are prohibited. As is linking exercising to weight loss. (“Keep going to burn off brunch!”).

Studies show the benefits of exercise, even weight neutral, are better sleep, lower stress, increased energy and the decreased risk of many diseases. A study in 2012 of almost 12,000 men and women found that healthy fitness led to a decrease in mortality regardless of the baseline body-mass index. They found physical activity reduced mortality 40-60%. Specifically, aerobic and resistance training can lower blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol.
My own person beef is the advertising of machines and health clubs on television using 20-somethings from California who won the body genetic lottery. Perhaps like fashion is beginning to display, those who are overweight or older certainly can display healthiness we all would like to adhere to.
So, feel like your body is worthy of being healthy and strong by exercising and using feeling better, not losing weight, as your motivation.

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:
Fancy Clam Dip
(I made this over the weekend and it was delicious. No need to worry about the clam taste as the other ingredients mask it. Seafood Station on Loveland Madiera Road has the canned clams, Kroger does not.)
Drain 2 (6.5-oz. or half of one 28-oz.) cans of clams reserving clam liquid. Stir together clams and 4 oz. softened cream cheese until smooth. Gently stir in ½ cup crème fraiche, 1.5 Tbsp. grated shallot, 1 tsp. lemon zest, 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce, and ½ tsp. kosher salt. If needed, stir in 1 tsp. reserved clam liquid to make creamy. Refrigerate at least one hour. Garnish with a sprinkle of hot sauce and fresh dill. Serve with Kettle-style potato chips that stand up to dipping.
