ZINC AND COVID-19

President Trump was recently treated for his Covid-19 with Regeneron, remdesivir, the steroid dexamethasone, vitamin D, famotidine (Pepcid), melatonin, aspirin, and zinc.

Why Zinc?
Zinc plays a critical role in regulating metabolism and the immune system. Studies have found that people are more likely to develop pneumonia and infections as well as suffer from conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease and chronic fatigue syndrome when their zinc is low. In fact, Spain reported that on average, those that died from Covid had zinc blood levels of 43 and those that lived 63. A level of 70 is considered normal.

(Did You Know? Red meat is the best dietary source of zinc. Whole grains, beans, and nuts have it but also have phytates which inhibit its absorption.)

A recent article in the Journal of Medical Virology notes that zinc may have an antiviral effect by inhibiting RNA viruses. They found this had an effect on the SARS virus.

Healthy adults usually have enough zinc and any extra taken in is simply excreted.

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:

Occasionally a patient who knows my love of wine will ask for a suggestion. My response is usually to ask someone who works at the store after giving them an idea of what you like and what you are willing to spend. Two pinot noirs that I like now are La Crema and Hahn. Both have multiple products and price points but you cannot go wrong with any of them. Availability is also not a concern with Kroger having them. If you want something more expensive, (Hahn starts at about $13) let me know.

SKIN CARE SPECIAL:
