Mused after after cooking with pineapple jerk salsa from Kroger. It can be used as a marinade for chicken or fish prior to grilling. I used it after sautéing onions, garlic and chicken. Add the jar to this and cook for another few minutes. Serve over polenta or rice.

    COLORECTAL CANCER

Excluding skin cancers, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in the U.S. Processed meats are associated with a higher risk, whereas high-fiber diets are associated with a lower risk.

A new study in JAMA Oncology points to chronic inflammation as a possible common thread between diet and risk. Researchers at Harvard found that people with dietary patterns most likely to cause inflammation were 32% more likely to develop colorectal cancer. A “proinflammatory” diet in the study included red and processed meats, whereas diets considered “anti-inflammatory” were rich in green leafy vegetables.

(Did You Know? Unless there is a family history, screening (colonoscopy in most cases) should begin at age 50.)

Two other factors changed the percentage of risk, gender and weight. Of the 32% increase in risk men had a 44% chance and women 22%. Overweight men had the potential risk of 48% however lean women had a 31% higher risk. Smoking, a sedentary lifestyle and excess alcohol intake increase risks.

The moral is to eat a diet rich in green leafy vegetables as well as yellow with fiber and eat less red and processed meat and sugar sweetened beverages. Also, Watch your weight and exercise.

Do you have unsightly brown spots on your face, hands or body?

SkinCeuticals (many of you use their skincare products) has developed a “pen” that uses cryotherapy or freezes age and sun spots as well as skin tags. It uses carbon dioxide which freezes the superficial part of the skin at -79 degrees C. The technique is similar to when family physicians and dermatologists use liquid nitrogen to treat skin cancers.

The procedure takes just a few minutes. The area is cleansed then sprayed with CO2 to freeze the spot. There is very little if any temporary discomfort. Immediately after, Vitamin C is applied and so can makeup. Vitamin C and a sunscreen are encouraged and should be applied while healing.

The lesion will get darker and possibly scab before it sheds. It can take 7-21 days to shed completely. Healthy pink skin or lightening of the dark spot will appear. Maturation of the skin then follows the normal skin cycle of 6 weeks.

If the spot is appropriate, we charge $150 for the first three spots then $30 for each thereafter.
