Mused after watching Adolescence on Netflix. A complex approach to a 13-year-old boy with interactions between his peers, parents, society and authority. Does he do it? Interestingly filmed continuously and very few scenes. Acting is superb. Only four episodes of 50 minutes but each building the suspense. A must.

(A follow up to my previously mentioned Prime commercials that you can interact with by using your remote to get information on products emailed to you or put them in your basket for purchase. While watching a Prime show the ensuing commercial was about a product I have been recently shopping for on Amazon Prime. They truly are next level marketing.)

Bottled Water, Everything You Wanted to Know

I know many of you have containers such as Stanley, but our country spent an estimated $49 billion on bottled water in 2023 and drank 16 billion gallons. This essay explains the many types of bottled waters. Let’s first explore tap water.

The EPA monitors drinking water and is some of the world’s safest. Public water is treated before arriving in homes to remove chemical and bacterial contamination. Those with home wells are responsible for ensuring that their supply is safe for drinking. Tap water does not have to taste or smell good for it to be safe for drinking. In 2024 legislation reduced the amount of “forever chemicals” in drinking water and required any system with lead pipes to be replaced within 10 years.

The FDA requires bottlers to not only maintain safe drinking water but to ensure that the water is what it states on the label. Filtered water may remove fluoride (see my email two weeks ago). Another concern is that plastic bottles may leach microplastics and chemicals such as bisphenol A into the water. Below are the categories of bottled water.

(Did You Know? An estimated 43 million Americans get their water from private underground wells. Gatorade was originally developed for the Florida Gators college football team.)

Bottled Water: (Dasani, Aquafina, Pure Life) Many come from municipal water supplies but bottlers use additional purification measures such as reverse osmosis. (We use reverse osmosis for the drinking water at my house. If you want more information, email me.)

Spring Water: (Evian, Acqua Panna, Poland Spring) Spring water originates from rainwater that moves underground and is filtered naturally by rocks and minerals. After that it is pushed up to the surface, the water is collected from the spring.

Mineral Water: (Perrier, San Pellegrino) To be labeled mineral/spring water must contain a certain amount of the dissolved solids present at the water source (minerals and trace elements).

Enhances Waters: (Vitamin water, Adirondack Enhanced Water) Some manufacturers enhance water by adding micronutrients including vitamins and sometimes minerals. Careful of those with added sugars. If the vitamin-infused waters have more than your daily needs, it is just excreted through your urine.

Electrolyte Water: (Gatorade, Propel) Sports drinks are intended for those who lose excessive sweat. They are not necessary for moderate exercise. Use anything exercising over an hour as a rough guide otherwise water works well.

Hydrogen Water: (HFactor, H2 for Life, Susosu) this is plain water with hydrogen gas added. It can come that way or with tablets to add. The theory is that it may have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Most studies haven’t been conclusive.

Purified Water: (Pure Life, Dasani Purified, Refreshe) Water undergoes “purification” through distillation, deionization, or reverse osmosis. This typically removes all unpleasant tastes and odors from the water as well.
