How to Suppress Your Inner Scrooge.
Do you feel guilty and avoid going near the Salvation Army bell ringers for charity? Most people do. But behaviorists also know that we feel happier when we commit ourselves to being more generous. Here are several strategies to being more giving.
First, make a plan. Decide how much you can afford to donate and to whom. Then formulate when and where to contribute.
Secondly, pre-commit to specific donations and lock them in at the beginning of the year. Such “commitment devices” lead to better decisions whether it is going to the gym or increasing retirement savings.
(Did You Know? My own action when confronted by someone selling an item (eg. cookies) I usually don’t use is to pay for it and ask them to give it to the next person they think would benefit by it. It’s like the car in front of you buying your Starbuck’s coffee. )
Finally, our actions are highly influenced by how we think we will be perceived by others. Letting friends know of our charitable activities motivates us to be consistent with our giving.
