Despite a lot of publicity of New York City controlling sugary beverage drinks like Coke, Pepsi, juices, energy drinks, and coffee concoctions etc. in an effort to reduce the rate of obesity, it was Berkeley, California that imposed a tax to control consumption. The tax is one cent per ounce and began in March 2015.

Researchers compared consumption patterns between Berkeley and nearby Oakland and San Francisco. They found that Berkeley had a 21% lower consumption of sugary drinks after the tax even as the other cities saw a 4% increase. Berkeley consumers also drank 63% more water according to the article in the American Journal of Public Health.
LA DOLCE VITA:
Chicken Thighs and Artichokes
8 chicken thighs
Salt and pepper
15 oz. artichoke hearts with ¼ cup brine
1 cup Greek olives
1 head of garlic, halved crosswise
1 lemon, thinly sliced
6 thyme twigs
1 cup chicken broth
½ cup white wine
1 Tbsp. Asian fish sauce
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Season the chicken with salt and pepper. Either brown the skin of the thighs or if using skinless like me, put the thighs, artichoke hearts, olives, garlic, lemon slices, and thyme in a baking dish. Mix the artichoke brine, stock, wine and fish sauce together and salt. Add this to the baking dish. Cover with foil and cook for about 45 to 60 minutes until the chicken is tender. Remove thyme. Serve with brown rice or quinoa.
