This time of year many of us will be flying and going through airport security. Given exposure to the large number of people that go to an airport, what are the chances of getting sick? D. William Schaffner from the Dept. of Preventative Medicine at Vanderbilt University has some recommendations.
Our primary defense is our basic immunity acquired through exposure. In fact, he says that there is growing evidence our immune system increases with exposure to germs. However, the hygiene of washing our hands and showering keeps “the bad guys at bay”.
Still worried? Wear socks or use disinfecting wipes on your hands and feet after going through security. The bins may also have bacteria but they are typically no different than those we are exposed to on a daily basis.
As he summarizes, wear socks and carry hand sanitizer, just don’t obsess.
