The American Cancer Society recently issued new guidelines for mammograms. Published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, there is also a recommendation against clinical breast exams. The intent is to signal that the exams aren’t a substitute for a mammogram.
The guidelines recommend women start annual mammograms at age 45 not the current 40. At age 55, women should cut back to one mammogram every two years and continue that pattern for as long as they are healthy and expect to live 10 years further.

Studies show that annual screening can cut the risk of death by 15-40%. False alarms are frequent with 61% of women who have annual mammograms called back for additional imaging. 7-9 % will have biopsies that don’t find cancer.
All of this should be discussed with your physician and your specific situation. This means that some women should have exams and mammograms outside these guidelines.
