Don’t Be Fooled by Weight Loss Fads
Most weight loss diets fail to deliver the results we want long term. When many diets were studied together, only 17% of those maintained their weight one year after stopping the diet. We won’t discuss GLP-1 injections here since I’ve done several Musings on them this past year. But here are some of the more common diets and problems with them.
Very Low-Calorie Diets
Initially the majority of weight loss is water weight and longer-term loss also involves muscle mass. It’s not a sustainable type of diet. When normal eating habits return, so does the weight. Restrictive diets also restrict vitamins and minerals essential to your diet. Low-calorie diets also slow down your metabolism, and again, weight rebounds when more calories are consumed. Remember, losing weight is about being healthier, not just skinnier.
Detox Diets and Cleanses
Fasting, liver flushes, colonics, herbs, teas, and supplements have been around since at least the 1940’s. There is NO scientific basis that the “detox” methods remove toxins form the body. That’s the job of the liver, kidneys and immune system. To support your natural detox system, drink plenty of water, get a good night’s sleep and consume a healthy dietary pattern.
(Did You Know? Most of these diets fall under the saying, “If it sounds too good to be true…”.)
“Miracle” Diets and Foods
None of these guarantee weight loss. Period, end of discussion.
Fad diets are based on misinterpretation of science, opinion, or outright lies. As always, a healthy dietary pattern includes: Protein from healthy sources, Carbohydrates mostly from whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and healthy Fats from fish, oils, and nuts.

Marry Me Chicken, the sauce is amazing!
Lindsay Funston, former editor at Delish, created a skillet Tuscan chicken recipe. Her producer tasted it and exclaimed: “I’d marry you for that chicken.” And Marry Me Chicken was born.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In an ovenproof skillet, heat 2 TBLS. oil. Salt and pepper 4–8-ounce skinless chicken breasts and cook until golden brown, about 5 minutes each side. Set chicken aside. Heat 2 more TBLS. of oil in same pan. Stir in 2 minced cloves of garlic, 1 TBSP. fresh thyme, 1 tsp. red pepper flakes and cook about one minute. Stir in ½ cup of chopped sun-dried tomatoes, ¾ cup of chicken broth, ¼ cup of grated Parmesan cheese and ½ cup of heavy cream. Bring to a simmer then return chicken and juices to skillet. Transfer skillet to oven and bake roughly 10-12 minutes until chicken completely cooked. Serve topped with torn fresh basil leaves. |
