VIAGRA MAY HELP WITH ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE, AI IS INVOLVED

A recent study in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease builds on prior research by the Cleveland Clinic that found less Alzheimer’s in those who take Viagra (sildenafil). AI (artificial intelligence) took 1600 drugs and identified 66 that interact with Alzheimer’s genes and pathology before settling on sildenafil having the most potential. Analyzing 7 million American insurance claims, they found that 69% were less likely to develop Alzheimer’s than those who didn’t take sildenafil. This includes adjusting for age, sex, and other diseases.

They found that sildenafil activated genes in neurons that are associated in cell growth, improved brain function and reduced inflammation. It’s doubtful that Viagra explains why men suffer from Alzheimer’s at much lower rates than women. Also, the link is still under investigation.

(Did You Know? Two recent data bases found that those who took sildenafil were 30-54% less likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.)

Two points can be taken from this besides the possibility of decreasing Alzheimer’s with sildenafil. The first is that AI has helped studies to connect current medications with unassociated diseases. The second is that sometimes drugs designed for one purpose can be used (and sometimes more helpful) for completely different purposes.

    Some examples:
Sildenafil was originally designed to treat hypertension and angina.
Minoxidil (Rogaine) helped ulcers in the 1950’s before discovering hair growth.
Antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine was repurposed to treat rheumatoid arthritis.
Obesity drugs, GLP-1 (Wegovy, Ozempic, Monjaro) originally were for diabetes and now many of you know that by slowing digestion and suppressing appetite help with weight loss.
Lastly, the Latisse we sell for longer, fuller eyelashes, was a glaucoma medicine.

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE

Orange peel (lots of orange flavor, some sweetness and some spiciness) cooking sauce from Kroger makes weekday meals easy. I took a bag of frozen mixed vegetables and warmed them in a pan and added half this bottle. While they finished cooking I sauteed a pound of scallops (you could use any seafood like shrimp or chicken) and added them to the vegetables. Allow all to mix for a couple of minutes and dinner is ready. I plan on making duck breast and covering it with this sauce.
Add a salad and dinner is ready.
