DIZZINESS DEMYSTIFIED Originating from the Latin, vertigo, means to turn. It can make you lightheaded, faint, nauseated with vomiting, and perhaps most dangerous is leading to a fall which is a leading cause of death in adults over 65. Vertigo itself is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Many cases originate in the inner ear, the headquarters of our body’s vestibular system, which regulates our sense of balance and spatial orientation. Minor and usually quickly passing triggers include dehydration, alcohol use, hormone shifts, certain foods, stress or anxiety and excessive tiredness. (Did You Know? “Like a whirlpool, it never ends.” Bonus points if you remember the song with these lyrics. Answer at end of email.) Here are some of the most common causes. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo which is when crystals in the inner ear (canaliths) shift out of place. Certain head movements can trigger this. Vestibular migraines are related to traditional ones but don’t necessarily involve a headache but do produce vertigo. Vestibular neuritis is caused by a viral infection called labyrinthitis (not to be confused with the 1986 kids’ movie The Labyrinth starring David Bowie). Meniere’s disease is marked by ear-ringing and progressive low-frequency hearing loss from a change in the inner ear’s fluid volume. The treatment depends on the cause but ranges from medications to vestibular therapy to manage dizziness and balance problems. The Epley maneuver is moving your head through a series of positions to move canaliths to areas that won’t trigger dizziness. It’s important to know that you should make a doctor’s appointment with your first episode as there is no way of knowing how serious and can sometimes be confused with stroke symptoms. -Harvard’s Women’s Health Watch LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE: Easy Summer Gin Recipes: Gin 1.5 parts Lemonade 3 parts Club Soda 3 parts Ice and mix.
