Mused after watching Bobby Flay and Giada DeLaurentis travel through Italy. She said as they sat down to a sumptuous meal, “a tavola no sit invecchia.” It means, “At the table you don’t age”. Makes sense to me especially when surrounded by family and friends.

    TICKS, MOSQUITOS AND LYME DISEASE

Mild winter is helpful for driving but not so with ticks. In Connecticut nearly 38% of ticks are infected with Lyme disease. Mice and deer are the most common animals that help tick survival and spread. Lyme Disease and the West Nile Virus continue to geographically expand also. Lyme Disease is the most common tick or mosquito-borne disease in the U.S. The West Nile Virus spreads between mosquitos and birds.

Ticks typically feed on humans 3-5 days before falling off. For Lyme disease to be transmitted it usually needs to be attached 24 -48 hours. The importance of this is to check for ticks after walking in fields, woods or other outdoor habitats.

When caught early enough, Lyme disease usually resolves after two to four weeks of treatment with antibiotics. However, an estimated 10% of those infected will have persistent muscle and joint pain, fatigue, and cognitive difficulties for months or years. Experts are not sure why this occurs but speculate that it is the result of residual damage of tissues caused by the disease. Others feel that it is a post-infection complication to the immune system.

(Did You Know? There are over 300,000 cases of Lyme disease each year.)

To remove a tick, try not to twist it but use a tweezers to remove all of it including the mouth attachment. Clean the area with alcohol or soap and water. Obviously where there’s one there may be others. Check closely. It’s also difficult to treat Lyme disease since the antibiotic (usually doxycycline) should be taken within 72 hours of transmission but symptoms may not occur until after that.

The CDC has suggestions on avoiding ticks and preventing Lyme disease.

    • Avoid tall grass.
    • DEET 20% or more on clothing.
    • Wear long pants and long sleeve shirts.
    • Shower or bath after spending time outside.
    • Check pets.
    • Drying clothes on high for 10 minutes.
    • And, of course, do a tick check including using a mirror.

NEW RF FRACTIONAL TREATMENTS FOR SKIN REJUVENATION

We now offer Endymed’s 3Deep RF fractional treatments to improve wrinkles and tighten loose skin. It is a combination of microneedling with RF (radio frequency) which warms the skin stimulating more collagen production than just microneedling. This “state of the art machine” causes less pain than similar machines and only requires one pass saving you time. This also results in no bleeding or bruising and minimal downtime. So this can easily be done during the summer while using a sunscreen after a treatment.

The areas recommended include face, neck, chest (or decolletage), hands, stretch marks, and other areas of loose skin. Three treatments one month apart are highly recommended over an individual treatment. Maintenance treatments can commence 6-12 months later.

(Did You Know?  Over 40 independent studies have been done to show the clinical improvement of RF fractional treatments.)

From now until September 1st, packages of three treatments of one area saves $300, two areas, $400, and three areas $500! One or more areas include face, neck, chest and hands. Normally three treatments of one area are $2250, now $1950, now two areas, $2900 (normally $3300), and three areas $3750 (normally $4250). For example, three treatments of the face and neck would be $2900 saving $400!

    Eggs Benedict with Avocado

    Enhancing Flavors

I was fortunate to have eggs benedict made for me yesterday. The addition of mashed avocado made it even more delicious. Sticking with breakfast, using cucumber vodka adds a different flavor to a Bloody Mary, a variety of frozen fruits added to a vanilla protein shake keeps them interesting, and “overnight oatmeal” changes a routine breakfast. The point being, think about what you’re fixing and see if there is something that can be added or changed to enhance the flavors.

    TESTIMONIAL OF THE WEEK

“Thank you so much for your diligent work…I appreciate you helping me to feel more at home in my own body.” S.
