Mused after reading that body roundness index (BRI) may replace body mass index (BMI). BMI is used as a measurement of health based on height and weight. However, there are outliers such as those who are very muscular. BRI uses waist circumference and height. This predominantly measures visceral fat which is associated with health risks. More to come on this…

    STAYING ACTIVE IN FOUL WEATHER

Besides your home, where can you walk in a climate-controlled place that has seating, restrooms, water fountains, Wi-Fi and it’s free? You guessed it, a mall! Bad weather need not slow you down. Here are some suggestions to help you maintain health when weather precludes outside activities.

The Home Front. Not only does this save time, but you can use many things around the house to help. Online classes or programs are available. These provide dancing, stretching, yoga and strength building. You may also have old video workout DVDs (I still use P90X occasionally, especially the yoga session). Strengthening can be done using your body weight for pushup, squats, lunges, and planks. Water jugs at 10 lbs. or cans can be used as weights. Marching in place (Jack Lalanne for you older types), dancing to music or climbing stairs are great for cardio.

Take a Class. Get a friend and head to your local Y, gym or community center. Sometimes a seasonal, temporary pass can be obtained.

(Did You Know? It is recommended that adults get two and a half hours of physical activity each week. Not all needs to be exercising because walking, household chores and yardwork when done with enough gusto qualify.)

Walk the mall. Yes, it does offer an opportunity. Challenge yourself to increase the number of laps or speed. You might even meet someone interesting. Leave your credit cards at home!

Indoor Alternatives. Indoor courts for sports such as tennis, pickleball, basketball, squash (that’s for you Sullivan), and racquetball may be options where you live. Lessons for other activities like fencing, judo, or other unusual activities may provide something new. Indoor pools are a great source of exercise whether taking a class or swimming laps.

The Key is to just do it!

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:

    Buffalo Chicken Sloppy Joes
A twist on sloppy joes using healthier ground chicken or ground turkey and buffalo sauce.

In a large skillet, heat two TBLS. of olive oil. Add one bag of frozen mirepoix (a diced mixture of onion, carrots, and celery purchased in the frozen vegetable section at Krogers). Defrost and warm vegetables for 5-6 minutes. Add three cloves of minced garlic and cook another minute. Add 2 lbs. of ground chicken or turkey and cook through. Add one 8 ounce can of tomato sauce (I used a can of zesty tomatoes, ½ cup buffalo sauce, 2 TBSP. honey or brown sugar and 2 TBSP. Worcestershire sauce. Salt to taste. Simmer 10-20 minutes until sauce as thick as you’d like it. Serve on hamburger buns with blue cheese or ranch dressing. Great reheated for two hours in a crock pot.
