Mused after noticing some of the trees’ leaves turning. A beautiful time of year yet we hesitate with what’s coming.

Metabolic Syndrome or Insulin Resistance Syndrome

One in three adults in the U.S. have metabolic syndrome. It is defined as having at least three of the following five symptoms: high blood pressure, large waist circumference, high blood levels of triglycerides or glucose, and a low HDL cholesterol. Those with metabolic syndrome have an increased incidence of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, heart attacks, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.

(Did You Know? Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that causes glucose/sugar to move from the bloodstream into cells where it is used for energy.)

    Factors

    1. Large waistline. Defined as over 35 inches in women and 40 inches in men. Measure half way between your hip bone and lowest rib to get the number. A large number indicates excess visceral or intraabdominal fat. This contributes to a number of problems including inflammation which can lead to anyone of the above health issues.
    2. High blood pressure. It is defined as high number above 130 or a low number above 80. High blood pressure damages the lining of blood vessels. This can lead to narrowing of blood vessels including those to the legs and heart. Blockages to brain arteries can not only lead to strokes but also contribute to dementia.
    3. High blood sugar levels. This is diagnosed by a blood glucose over 100. Another way blood glucose is measured is hemoglobin A1c. Cells become less responsive to insulin leading to diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
    4. High blood triglycerides. Fasting triglycerides greater than 150 can contribute to blood vessel narrowing.
    5. Low HDL cholesterol. Males less than 40 and females less than 50. “Bad” cholesterol, LDL, delivers cholesterol to blood vessels whereas “good” HDL removes it.

Note: Body mass index (BMI) is not part of metabolic syndrome.

Prevention and reversing metabolic symptoms can be helped by losing weight, physical activity, less salt, limiting simple carbs, eating healthy, stopping smoking, and taking meds as prescribed.

NEW RF FRACTIONAL TREATMENTS FOR SKIN REJUVENATION

We now offer Endymed’s 3Deep RF fractional treatments to improve wrinkles and tighten loose skin. It is a combination of microneedling with RF (radio frequency) which warms the skin stimulating more collagen production than just microneedling. This “state of the art machine” causes less pain than similar machines and only requires one pass saving you time. This also results in no bleeding or bruising and minimal downtime. So this can easily be done during the summer while using a sunscreen after a treatment.

The areas recommended include face, neck, chest (or decolletage), hands, stretch marks, and other areas of loose skin. Three treatments one month apart are highly recommended over an individual treatment. Maintenance treatments can commence 6-12 months later.

(Did You Know? Over 40 independent studies have been done to show the clinical improvement of RF fractional treatments.)

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE
Over 50 Years of Running, the Airforce Marathon, and the “Zen” of Running

Dr. M and Karine Lewis, skin care nurse

Over the weekend I ran my 10th and probably last marathon in Dayton. A marathon always strikes me as ironic. Most runners are introverts given the amount of time by themselves training. There are plenty of runners who train in groups or even walkers who do it socially. But cramming 20,000 runners together into “corrals” makes some nervous to be surrounded by strangers.

There’s a certain “Zen” to running and walking like meditation and yoga. It’s time to be inside one’s own head. It’s impossible not to contemplate one’s life, enjoy nature or just relax to music. I’ve solved many problems during my runs as well as counted my blessings. Every race I think about a cousin who is one year older than me who has had multiple sclerosis for the past 40 years. Most of it being unable to walk. It could have just as easily have been me.

Find some exercise or physical activity you love and stick with it. It can enrich your life.

    Something fun:

Which of the following is false?
    1. Dr. M took a bath with 10 pounds of ice after the marathon.
    2. Dr. M got sunburned by forgetting his sunscreen.
    3. Dr. M counts Golden Retrievers during his races and saw only one.
    4. Dr. M finally heard the runners’ anthem, “Born to Run” by Bruce Springsteen at the 25th mile.

    b. He remembered his sunscreen and it’s on sale here this month.

Finally, a special shout out to the young soldier who greeted me at the finish line by shaking my hand, putting my medal around my neck, telling me I did a good job and drink plenty of water- all while looking me directly in the eye. His parents have got to be proud of him!
