CONSTANTLY RUNNING TO THE BATHROOM, GETTING UP AT NIGHT?

Are you the person who carries around their insulated tumbler with water?  Are you constantly looking for a bathroom?  Could there be a connection?  Not that that is obvious, but there are many other causes of frequent urination.

Defined as urinating more than eight times during the day or more than once at night. (Don’t tell that to a man’s prostate.)  Beside how much we drink, the causes can be what we drink, physical conditions, and medications.

(Did You Know?  “There is little scientific basis for stating a daily requirement for eight glasses of water,” says Dr. Irwin Rosenberg professor at the Friedman School of Tuft’s University. It stems back to a study in 1945 that found our bodies use about 64 ounces each day.  We intake water in many ways so, in many cases, we don’t need to drink the extra 64 ounces.)

    Contributors:

    1. Caffeine and alcohol.  These substances prompt the kidneys to produce urine and act as bladder irritants increasing the urgency to urinate.
    2. Carbonated drinks.  These also irritate the bladder.
    3. Artificial sweeteners.  Again, a bladder irritator.
    4. Pregnancy.  No surprise to any of you.  The baby physically presses on the bladder.
    5. Aging.  Estrogen receptors line the bladder and with diminishing estrogen levels, it causes the feeling of your bladder feeling fuller, sooner.
    6. Anxiety.  Test taking? Job interview?  Something important to tell?  All cause the muscles around the bladder to contract provoking the urge to urinate.
    7. Medications include water pills (diuretics), some blood pressure drugs, some antidepressants, and benzodiazepines.
    8. Medical conditions.  Uncontrolled diabetes, sleep apnea, urinary tract infections (probably one of the most common causes) and some neurological conditions.

See a doctor if changing how much you drink doesn’t change the number of times you urinate.  Also, pain with urination, occasional incontinence, a bulge in your vagina, or feeling that you can’t completely empty your bladder.  Lastly, when there is no obvious cause, a condition called overactive bladder (OAB) may be the case.  Up to 40% of women may have it at one time or another.
