Healthy Vacation Habits to Continue All Year

What if we could keep the best parts of our vacation and use them to fuel better health year-round? Vacations allow us to take a step back and focus on ourselves giving us permission and time to explore what’s important. Habits to foster fall under the categories of “doing more of something” and “doing less of others.”

More time outdoors. Spending time in nature can improve health in a wide range, from lowering stress and blood pressure to promoting exercise. Even sitting, watching nature, listening to animals can help us relax.

More movement. When doing it for fun, walking, swimming, biking, and hiking can be more fun and less a chore when on vacation with others. Think of those beach walks or a walk in the woods.

(Did You Know? More than four in 10 cancers are linked to lifestyle choices we can change such as poor diet and physical activity.)

Less time online. Spending less time on screens allows for more time doing more productive things such as family time or sleep. Doing activities that your kids like helps our relationship and takes our minds off our own concerns. (I remember this when I’d read to my daughters at bedtime while they were growing up.)

More varied diet. Vacation food can be overly rich and caloric (think cruises). But it’s an opportunity to incorporate a wider variety of fruits and vegetables with fewer processed foods.

More dining with others. When you’re enjoying a leisurely meal with others, you’re less likely to eat to quickly and overeat. Also, as you saw under Musings, socializing can help prevent cognitive decline.

More sleep. A significant part of revitalizing comes from getting more sleep. Practice good sleep hygiene by avoiding screens for an hour before bed and keeping consistent bed and wake times.

Reading. Lastly, spending more time on vacation reading, playing board games or Wordle helps to exercise your brain.

    Use it or lose it!

Grilled Corn on the Cob and Mexican Street Corn Recipes

This is the best time of the year for corn on the cob. I recommend the farmer’s markets or roadside stands (Bloom and Berries has one on Loveland Madiera Road). Last night I grilled some and used some butter that I had added things to. Here’s some thoughts and recipes.

To grill the corn, I sprayed the shucked ears with olive oil. You can wrap the shucked corn with foil if you are putting a special butter on the corn prior to grilling to infuse those flavors. You can put unshucked corn directly on the grill plus or minus soaking them in water. It truly doesn’t make a difference. With all the above, use a medium to low heat, rotate every 3-4 minutes to cook all sides. It usually takes 15-20 minutes.

To make a tasty butter, leave a half stick out to get room temperature. Add to it half a lime with zest and juice, ¼ tsp. cayenne pepper, ¼ cup chopped cilantro, salt to taste, and Cotija cheese (feta or Romano work also). Wrap in cellophane and refrigerate. Serves four ears of corn.

Mexican street corn starts with grilling the corn to get the char, then slicing it off the cob. Add 2 ounces of Cotija cheese, ½ cup of cilantro, 1 diced seedless jalapeno, 1 minced clove of garlic, 2 Tbls. of mayonnaise, 1 Tbls. lime juice and chile or cayenne powder to taste and combine. Serves four. Don’t forget the cerveza!
