FIBROIDS: NOT JUST A YOUNG WOMAN’S PROBLEM
Fibroids are noncancerous growths in the uterine wall that affect up to eight in 10 women by age 50. Women in their 40s or early 50s whose fibroids cause only mild problems may be told to be patient since fibroids rely on estrogen to thrive. Once the decrease of estrogen from reaching menopause occurs, the fibroids typically get better according to Dr. Elisa Jorgensen from Massachusetts General Hospital. About one-third of newly diagnosed fibroids occur in women in their mid-to-late 40s. recent findings suggest that even after menopause small fibroids can continue to grow. Fibroids, while their cause is unknown, tend to run in families. Fibroids grow faster and larger in those overweight. (Did You Know? Uterine fibroids are also known as leiomyomas.) Signs of fibroids may include heavy bleeding, pelvic or lower back pain, bloating, frequent urination, or painful sex. With hormone blocking treatment or menopause, bleeding may go away but the size or location physically may continue to push against the bladder or other local anatomy requiring attention. Myomectomy and hysterectomy are the two surgical treatments. -Harvard Women’s Health Watch
