TIME TO SEE A UROLOGIST? TESTICULAR CANCER

Urologic issues occur throughout men’s lives from infections and testicular masses when young, to frequent urination and prostate cancer when older. Like most diseases, early detection and prevention are key.

There are a number of things to look for or to be aware:
Pain during urination
Blood in your urine
Pain in the testicles
Erectile or ejaculation problems
Prostate cancer, PSA levels
Kidney cancer
Frequent urination
Recurring urinary tract infections
Pain during sex
Bladder cancer
Kidney stones

Testicular cancer is the most common cancer for males between the ages of 15-35. About 1 in 250 males will develop it. There are two types of testicular cancer, seminoma and non-seminoma. Seminoma is usually slower growing affecting males in their 40’s and 50’s. Non-seminoma affects younger males and is more aggressive. Earlier detection can lead to high cure rates.

The most common sign of testicular cancer is a mass. There can also be heaviness, a dull lower abdominal ache, abrupt scrotal swelling, pain or testicular atrophy. The treatment depends on the stage but usually removing the cancerous testicle, possibly local lymph nodes and followed by chemotherapy, again possibly radiation.

Much like breast cancer detection, monthly self-examination is key. There is a technique using both hands to ensure adequate examination that is easily found on the interweb.

30 Minute Turkey Noodle Soup
With Thanksgiving next week, many grocers have turkey stock which saves you the time of making your own after the holiday.

In a large pot, heat two TBLS. of olive oil. Add one bag of frozen mirepoix (a diced mixture of onion, carrots, and celery purchased in the frozen vegetable section at Krogers). Defrost and warm vegetables for 5-6 minutes. Add two quarts of turkey stock (tends to have more flavor), 1 tsp. sage, a bay leaf, 1 tsp. thyme, 1 tsp. salt and ½ tsp. pepper and bring to a boil. Add half a bag of good quality, wide, egg noodles (8oz.). Simmer for 5 minutes. In meantime shred 1-2 cups of leftover turkey and add to soup. If you need more flavor, add a teaspoon of chicken bouillon. Cook 5-10 minutes more to warm up and finish cooking all.
