Mused after reading that a U.K. study of over 78,000 adults who walked about 10,000 steps a day after seven years had an overall lower incidence of dementia than those who didn’t walk as much. It adds to the body of work that being active (along with consuming a healthy diet and not smoking) is one of the best tools we have for minimizing dementia. -Tuft’s Health and Nutrition Letter.
DOGS, CATS TIED TO LOWER CHILD FOOD ALLERGIES
Children with dogs and cats in their homes were less likely to develop food allergies. A study from Fukushima Medical University of over 66,000 children published these findings. They measured children from prenatal development through age 3.
Those living with indoor dogs were less likely to experience egg, milk, and nut allergies. Those with cats were less likely to have egg, wheat and soybean allergies. Other pets such as turtles or birds had no association with food allergies although those with hamsters had an increased incidence of nut allergies. Those with animals living in the house had fewer food allergies than those with outdoor pets.
(Did You Know? Food allergies affect more than 5% of U.S. children. In general, food allergies are more prevalent in developed nations)
This study is unique with its large sample size, range of pets and foods examined, and in its differentiation between prenatal and postnatal exposure. This points to the hygiene hypothesis which says that contact with bacteria and other microbes including from animals, may be essential for building a healthy immune system. Specifically, it may increase gut microbes and their diversity.
There are some limitations to this study. The study did not test for allergies but relied on a doctor’s diagnosis reported by the parents. Also, only Japan was involved which may have unique characteristics that other countries don’t have.

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:
Peyton Manning and Bobby Flay’s Chicken Parmigiana
Both recipes are similar with the exception of Peyton cooks his chicken in the frying pan whereas Bobby, after browning the chicken adds his sauce and cheese on then cooks it 5-7 minutes at 400 degrees in the oven.
Sauce: Chop one small onion and mince 3 garlic cloves cook until soft in olive oil. Stir in a 28 ounce can of San Marzano tomatoes with basil. Season with salt and pepper to taste and simmer about 30 minutes until thickened. (A jar of store-bought sauce like Raos can be used also.)
Chicken: Season both sides of chicken breasts that have been pounded thin, about a half an inch. Dredge in flour then dip in a bowl with a couple of beaten eggs. Then dredge in panko bread crumbs (adding parmesan cheese to this makes it crunchier according to Peyton.) Add oil to a fry pan and brown both sides. Again you can either cook it longer here to complete the chicken or put it in the oven after assembling the Parm. Top each breast with sauce followed by a few slices of mozzarella, a Tbls of Parmesan cheese and salt and pepper. Put in oven until the cheese is melted under broiler. Peyton also puts his on rolls that have been browned in the oven before assembling and melting the cheese.

Prices going up…
It’s been many years since we last increased our prices particularly with micropeels or the lunchtime facials that have such a loyal following. I’m sure everyone can appreciate how costs of labor, materials and manufacturing have gone up. Beginning April 1st, the costs of skin care products will go up commiserative with what the companies have increased to us. We will however have deluxe samples to go with many of the skin care products during the month of April. On May 1st, services are going up but there will be packages for each of them to save in costs. For example, micropeels will be $130 each but a package of 3 will be $360 and a package of 6 will be $660. May’s special will be 50% off for referrals to skin care for micropeels as well as for our patient who made the referral.
Dr. McKenna’s secret to his skin appearance is that he has been using our skin care products for many years. He said, “the skin care nurses tell me what to use and how to use it and I just put it on.”
In the AM: CE Ferulic, DOSE product specifically for him, and sunscreen.
In the PM: Retin-A and TNS Advanced Serum.
(By the way, he hasn’t had a facelift! ;))
