  • Digestive System Freezer Cocktail Recipes; The Bear Crawl Exercise DOSE Personalized Skin Care Serum is 20% off Celebrating 30 Years of Improving Lives Since 1992…and Once Again, a Top Doc 2022

Mused after getting back from a recent vacation of ingesting too many calories and not enough activities. Anyone else find it hard for your watch to fit after gaining a few pounds?

    Digestive System

    Mouth:
The smell or sight of food starts the secretion of saliva which begins the breakdown of food by amylase and lubricates it for comfort in swallowing.

    Esophagus:
10-13 inches long it contracts sending the food into the stomach. Irritation of this by stomach juices can cause heartburn.

    Stomach:
It holds food until the small intestine is ready and, in the meantime, gastric juice with its digestive enzymes breakdown proteins. This and stomach muscle movement results in a paste.

(Did You Know? Fiber from fruits, vegetables, nuts seeds, legumes, and whole grains keep contents in your gut moving and nurture healthy gut microbiota.)

    Small Intestine:
This is where most of nutrients are absorbed including Proteins, carbohydrates, fats and micronutrients. It is about 20 feet long and one inch in diameter. Enzymes from the pancreas and gallbladder empty into this to help with digestion.

    Large Intestine:
Anything not ingested moves here including dietary fiber. Most of the water from the digested food is removed here. It is about 3 inches in diameter but only 5 feet long. It usually takes about 36 hours for the stool to pass through. Many of the bacteria that affect our health (both ways) are located here. There are immune components too that are not fully understood.

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE

Drinks to make and place in the freezer. When you are ready, just add to a coop or Nick and Nora glass (more on glasses next week.) I just used liquor bottles with screw tops to avoid leakage. The water added to each simulates ice that dissolve in a just-made drink.

Manhattan: 12 oz. rye, 6 oz. sweet vermouth, 6 dashes angostura bitters, 3 oz. water. Add a cherry to the glass.

Martini: 12 oz. gin, 6 oz. dry vermouth, 3 oz. water. Add olives, onion or whatever your choice to the glass.

Negroni: 6 oz. each of gin, sweet vermouth and Campari. Add twist of orange to glass.

Cosmopolitan: 12 oz. lemon vodka, 6 oz. orange liquor, 2 oz. each of lime juice, cranberry juice and water.

Put each in freezer for at least 3 hours and chill the glass with water and ice before pouring your drink.

    EXERCISE OF THE WEEK:

The Bear Crawl: Get on your hands and knees. Now lift your knees off the ground but keep your butt down and your back flat. Now walk using your hands and feet. Too hard? Try just lifting yourself in a push-up position or plank position and hold it. Once you get the feel for it go outside and see how far you can go. Try the beach.

    SERVICES:

    Cellulite?
Cellfina, www.cellfina.com, is the only FDA-cleared minimally invasive procedure clinically proven to improve the appearance of cellulite for at least three years. The best candidate has dimpling that is not caused by loose skin. The benefits are a long-lasting, single, in-office treatment that usually takes under an hour. No general anesthesia is needed and downtime is limited in most cases to the day of treatment. 96% of patients were satisfied after two years.

    Permanent Makeup?
Micro-blading is a technique of applying permanent makeup to your eyebrows with individual strokes simulating individual hairs. We also do permanent eyeliner and lips.

Facial, Neck, Chest, or Hand Wrinkles? Brown Spots?
Collagen Induction Therapy or microneedling reduces pigmentation and improves wrinkles with virtually no down time. Multiple treatments are needed but can be done within an hour. Call for our packages.

Neck Bands or Hypersweating under Arms?
Botox can help with both. Come in for a free consult.

Weak Chin, Nasal Imperfections, Aging or Thin Earlobes?
Juvederm plumps chins and earlobes and sometimes nasal imperfections.

    Leg Veins?
Sclerotherapy improves spider veins in your legs.

Do you have unsightly brown spots on your face, hands or body?

SkinCeuticals (many of you use their skincare products) has developed a “pen” that uses cryotherapy or freezes age and sun spots as well as skin tags. It uses carbon dioxide which freezes the superficial part of the skin at -79 degrees C. The technique is similar to when family physicians and dermatologists use liquid nitrogen to treat skin cancers.

The procedure takes just a few minutes. The area is cleansed then sprayed with CO2 to freeze the spot. There is very little if any temporary discomfort. Immediately after, Vitamin C is applied and so can makeup. Vitamin C and a sunscreen are encouraged and should be applied while healing.

The lesion will get darker and possibly scab before it sheds. It can take 7-21 days to shed completely. Healthy pink skin or lightening of the dark spot will appear. Maturation of the skin then follows the normal skin cycle of 6 weeks.

If the spot is appropriate, we charge $150 for the first three spots then $30 for each thereafter.
