| BOTOX IS 20 YEARS OLD
It is the 20th anniversary of Botox’s approval for facial lines/wrinkles. Botox relaxes muscles so the overlying wrinkles get better. Botox takes a few days to work, maximizes its effect on muscles at about a week, and lasts in most people 3-4 months. Those with deeper wrinkles may see more improvement after several injections. If you don’t exercise a muscle, it gets smaller. We’ve noted this on men with deep forehead wrinkles that saw continued improvement even up to a couple of years when treated regularly. Most commonly Botox is used for wrinkles between the eyebrows, the forehead and crow’s feet areas.
(Did You Know? Botox was used for many years prior to approval for wrinkles as a method of relaxing spastic arms and legs. The inability to move an extremity makes daily functions difficult and this helps with some movement.)
Experience, as it is with most things is the key to getting the best results. I have been injecting Botox since it came on the market 20 years ago. We estimate that I have injected Botox over 60,000 times.
The cost for Botox is $17/unit for the first 15 units (the most common amount I inject in an area so the cost is $265.) The second 15 units are priced at $15 a unit and anything beyond this is $13/unit.
The other injectables we use are “fillers”. They work by injecting the material deep in the skin or just below it to mechanically raise up the skin. Fillers are also temporary. Mostly, we use Juvederm Ultra Plus, Vollure and Voluma. |

Quick Shepherd’s Pie |

 Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
In an oven-proof pan add 2 Tbls. oil and brown 1 lb. of ground beef, lamb or turkey. Remove browned meat (or plant based). Add 2 more Tbls. oil and one bag of mirepoix (found in the freezer section at Kroger, basically cut up onions, celery and carrots.) Cook for 2-3 minutes. Add half a bag of frozen peas and/or corn. Cook until defrosted. Add 2 Tbls. tomato paste, 2 Tbls. of Worcestershire sauce and 1 cup of chicken or beef stock. Add browned meat and simmer 3-5 minutes until all the ingredients are combined. Salt and pepper to taste. Cover with one thawed bag of either mashed potatoes or mashed cauliflower. Put in the oven about 10 minutes until the top is brown and underneath is bubbling. |
