APHASIA, THE INABILITY TO UNDERSTAND OR EXPRESS SPEECH

Recently the actor, Bruce Willis, announced his retirement due to a disorder called aphasia. Aphasia is damage to the part of the brain associated with speech. The four broad causes are stroke, brain damage from trauma, a brain tumor or a progressive neurologic disease. It disrupts to expression and understanding of language as well as the ability to read and write.

There are various types depending on what is affected:

Aphasia is usually diagnosed by history and a radiographic brain scan. A speech pathologist can then assess the type and extent of the injury.
