    Mused after yesterday’s Autumnal Equinox when the sun is directly above the equator. The days are now shorter than the nights. Last week was a “Harvest Full Moon” when farmers traditionally started harvesting crops to avoid frost (I don’t think our weather forecast has frost in the near future. LOL) A poem to start your week:

    SAY WHAT? HOW COMMON HEARING LOSS IS AND WHAT TO DO

    One in five people in their 20s show signs of hearing loss. Up to 38 million Americans have some level of loss. Men are twice as likely as women to have it. Emerging evidence suggests that hearing may be important to overall health. An analysis of 35 studies published in 2020 found that hearing loss was associated with greater odds of depression.

    A Lancet report showed that hearing loss as the leading modifiable risk factor for dementia. The association between hearing loss and cognitive decline may be that sensory deprivation may cause permanent changes to brain structure and function. Social isolation, depression and decrease physical activity often associated with hearing loss may also increase risk for dementia.

    Hearing comes from stereocilia which are hairlike cells in the cochlea of the inner ear. They bend in response to sound waves and send a signal to the brain which it interprets as sound. These hairs wear down over time especially with loud sounds and eventually can’t respond to soft tones.

    (Did You Know? About 15 % of adults report some trouble hearing. This increases to 25% in those ages 65 to 74 and 50% for those 75 and older.)

    What to do? If you are having difficulty following conversations, have to turn up the volume to hear the TV, hearing a persistent ringing or buzzing (tinnitus), or withdrawing from social situations because it’s hard to follow what’s going on, then you should seek help.

    Free apps like Mimi, SonicCloud and soon, Hearing Number give you a hearing score. If you are in the mild to moderate problem, try a over the counter hearing device. If worse, see a specialist.

    Like cataracts, hearing loss is easily corrected. Hearing aids are associated with a lower risk of death than those who never used them. It may also increase awareness of other conditions and help diagnose and treat them.

    For everyone, a baseline hearing test at age 55 is a good idea.

    Bluetooth connectivity and rechargeable batteries as well as smaller size and enhanced cosmetic appeal are all improvements in hearing aids. The recent deregulation may also result in decreased costs for them.

    Lastly, the FDC has approved some models of AIRPODS as a way to improve hearing.

    Mushroom Mania
    Mushrooms are the fruiting body of a fungus. White button mushrooms are the most common in the U.S. Like human skin, if mushrooms are exposed to UV light, vitamin D is produced making them the only natural non-animal food source of vitamin D.
    They have a modest amount of protein but, like animal proteins, they have all the amino acids the human body requires. They also have some fiber, potassium, and minerals.
    Look for a fresh, firm, smooth surface. For richer flavor choose those with exposed gills like portobello and shiitake. Before using, wipe with a clean damp paper towel or rise gently and pat dry. Keep in original container or a paper bag in the refrigerator.
    Use mushrooms in a variety of ways that you would use ground beef. Sauté them by themselves or as I commonly do, with diced onions to add as a topping, or mix with vegetables, eggs, and pasta.
