Mused after reading in JAMA Psychiatry that you have a 9% lower risk of dying over a three-year span than those who didn’t feel grateful for what they are thankful for.   This data comes from a questionnaire of over 49,000 women.  So, count your blessings above all!

KEEPING A LOVED ONE AWAKE AT NIGHT?  MAYBE IT’S RLS.

Restless legs syndrome was first described in the 17th century and was often dismissed as a bizarre neurosis.  The creepy-crawly feeling to sometimes painful leg sensations are typically worse while resting.  Muscle twitching can occur especially at night.  It affects twice as many women as men.  There is also a genetic component to it.

Iron-deficiency anemia can be a cause.  Even those with normal iron levels can have it due to iron not transported into their brain cells.  Those affected with this may need intravenous iron therapy.

(Did You Know?   Up to 10% of Americans cope with RLS according to the NIH.  About a quarter of pregnant women will have RLS while expecting but often disappears after childbirth.)

RLS used to be treated with drugs that boost the chemical dopamine such as Sinemet, Mirapex and Neupro.  Long term studies found that although effective early, they worsen RLS symptoms long term.  Now they are used for those who don’t respond to other therapies.

Today’s treatments beside iron include anticonvulsants (Neurontin, Lyrica), electrical stimulation therapy (TENS pads), and long-acting, low-dose opioids (methadone, Suboxone).

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE:

    Broccoli Slaw

A shortcut on making slaw is to start with precut slaw, or in my case to get more veggie variety, broccoli slaw.  It has cabbage and carrots but also obviously, broccoli.  I added two small stalks of fennel, a thinly sliced shallot and a small amount of red onion, again thinly sliced.

The dressing consisted of ½ cup of mayo (you can use light, or in my case, lime flavored), 1/3 cup of cider vinegar, 1 TBLS. olive oil, 1 TBLS. Dijon mustard, 1 tsp. salt, 1 tsp. celery salt, and ½ tsp. pepper.  Mix separately from dry ingredients and add slowly until you have the amount that works for you in the slaw.

I used it on a tostada and can be used on many sandwiches for crunch or as a side instead of a salad.
