Mused after reading that “Dog Days of Summer” purportedly came from ancient times from the brightest star in the night sky: Sirius, known as the Dog Star. Also, Sirius is located in the constellation of Canis Major or Greater Dog it’s linked to canine associations. Homer in “The Iliad”, referred to “the star they call Orion’s dog.” Since it is in the same region of the sky as the sun, they believed that it added to the sun’s warmth. Something to think about while you’re trying to escape the heat of summer, as dogs do. -Ben Zimmer

    TICKS, MOSQUITOS AND LYME DISEASE

Mild winter is helpful for driving but not so with ticks. In Connecticut nearly 38% of ticks are infected with Lyme disease. Mice and deer are the most common animals that help tick survival and spread. Lyme Disease and the West Nile Virus continue to geographically expand also. Lyme Disease is the most common tick or mosquito-borne disease in the U.S. The West Nile Virus spreads between mosquitos and birds.

Ticks typically feed on humans 3-5 days before falling off. For Lyme disease to be transmitted it usually needs to be attached 24 -48 hours. The importance of this is to check for ticks after walking in fields, woods or other outdoor habitats.

When caught early enough, Lyme disease usually resolves after two to four weeks of treatment with antibiotics. However, an estimated 10% of those infected will have persistent muscle and joint pain, fatigue, and cognitive difficulties for months or years. Experts are not sure why this occurs but speculate that it is the result of residual damage of tissues caused by the disease. Others feel that it is a post-infection complication to the immune system.

(Did You Know? There are over 300,000 cases of Lyme disease each year.)

To remove a tick, try not to twist it but use a tweezers to remove all of it including the mouth attachment. Clean the area with alcohol or soap and water. Obviously where there’s one there may be others. Check closely. It’s also difficult to treat Lyme disease since the antibiotic (usually doxycycline) should be taken within 72 hours of transmission but symptoms may not occur until after that.

The CDC has suggestions on avoiding ticks and preventing Lyme disease.
    Avoid tall grass.
DEET 20% or more on clothing.
Wear long pants and long sleeve shirts.
Shower or bath after spending time outside.
    Check pets.
Drying clothes on high for 10 minutes.
And, of course, do a tick check including using a mirror.

LA DOLCE VITA, JOIE DE VIVRE
Spicy Ceviche, with or without “cooked’ seafood.

Ceviche traditionally has seafood (sole, tuna, scallops, etc.) that are “cooked” by marinating them in acids such as lime, lemon or orange juice. Ceviche can also be made by cooking shrimp and adding that to the traditional ingredients. Either way, it’s a nice small meal or appetizer on a hot summer night.

If you are using uncooked seafood like above: add 1 cup orange juice, 1/3 cup each lime and lemon juice, 1 tsp. red pepper flake, a diced red onion, a minced clove of garlic to a pound of your favorite uncooked seafood diced or ½ pound of two of the above. Make sure seafood is covered by the juices, cover and set in refrigerator for 3 or more hours until fish is white. (tuna only needs an hour.) Once “cooked” or if using cooked shrimp, I like to add some of the following: a diced green or red bell pepper, a tsp. ginger, a cup of diced cherry tomatoes, a couple of diced green onions, a small can of green chilis, or an avocado or two that’s been diced.
Add ½ cup of chopped cilantro or parsley and serve on lettuce.
(You can also poach uncooked seafood by putting it in simmering water for a minute or two to cook it.)
BONUS: La Jaiba restaurant in Symmes Township on Montgomery Road has terrific shrimp ceviche.

    TESTIMONIAL:
“Thank you for the best care/experience ever!” P.B.
