Mused after reading that those who improved their diet by 20% by eating more whole grains, vegetables, and omega-3-fatty acids (think seafood) reduced their risk of dying in the next 12 years by 17% –New England Journal of Medicine

How to Select Wine at Stores

Many of you know that I am into wines.  In fact, I have been collecting them for over 25 years.  So I frequently get asked how to buy wines.  I found a great article that has some simple tips.

Tip 1:  Buy wine from a store that will help you.  Some places don’t help or worse, make you feel stupid.

Tip 2:  Ask for help.  My number one advice because each store has something different so it is too hard to recommend a specific wine and expect it to be at every store.

Tip 3:  Be sign savvy.  Many wines have signs in front of them describing them and with ratings.  Make sure it is the same wine AND SAME Year that they a describing.  There is quite a bit of variability between the same wine year to year.

(Did You Know?  Some of my favorite wineries are Caymus, Joseph Phelps, Calera, Pride Mountain, and anything by Orin Swift.  The reason is that ALL the wines they make are good, red or white.)

Tip 4:  Take a picture of the label.  Anytime you enjoy a wine take a picture.  You can use it shopping or look it up on a free app like Vivino to get more information.

Tip 5:  Be as specific as you can.  Start with red or white, then how much you’d like to spend and if there is a wine or flavor that you have had previously that you liked.  Again, pictures are helpful.
