  • Statins, Risks of Stopping Them

Mused while watching the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. Fortunately my brother who lives in Houston is safe and dry. Years ago my family lost everything but our swimsuits we were wearing when a hurricane hit while we were on vacation. Go to www.NVOAD.org to donate.

A recent study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that one in five patients taking a statin (Lipitor, Crestor, Zocor, etc.) report a side effect, mainly muscle aches. About one-third will stop taking the statin. They are then 13% more likely to die or have a heart attack over the next four years.

Another recent study published in the Lancet looked at the muscle ache side effects. They found that the incidence of muscle aches was similar in those taking a placebo with those actually on a statin. Another study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that those who reported intolerance to two or more statins had a muscle ache rate of 42.6% but when switched to a placebo still had a rate of 26.5 %.

(Did You Know? About 56 million Americans take statins. Statins were discovered about 30 years ago. They lower LDL cholesterol levels decreasing cardiovascular disease.)

The point of these studies is that the true rate of significant muscle aches or muscle breakdown is probably lower than what is reported. Simply stopping the statin can cause a higher risk of a cardiovascular event. For those with a true muscle problem, switching to a lower dose or different statin should be discussed with your physician.
