Managing Special Diets at Holiday Meals

There are many forms of special diets from something as simple as watching salt or carb intake to lactose or gluten intolerance to true food allergies.  Here are some tips to help everyone enjoy their meals.

    1. Consider serving the meal buffet-style.  People can then eat around their dietary restrictions.
    2. Offer simply prepared dishes so there are fewer ingredients to be aware of.
    3. Serve toppings on the side.
    4. Keep recipes handy to look up ingredients.
    5. Offer some non-alcoholic but festive drinks.

(Did You Know?   Here is the carb bad news (all are in gms of carbs).  Mashed potatoes 30, sweet potato casserole 35, stuffing 30, dinner roll 30, pumpkin pie 27 fruit pie 45 pecan pie 68, and cranberry sauce 23. )

    1. Consider meal timing especially for diabetics.
    2. Share the menu in advance.
    3. Watch the salt.  Leave salt and pepper on the table for individual seasoning.
    4. Be carbohydrate aware.  Remember portion control.
    5. Have something available for those that are vegetarians or vegans or allow them to bring their own main dish.

    LA DOLCE VITA

Wines for Thanksgiving:  Champagne or rose is a festive way to get the day started.  Light wines are great with appetizers such as rieslings, sauvignon blanc, or pinot noir. They can also be served with Thanksgiving dinner.  Others for dinner especially with turkey include chardonnay, zinfandel, and syrah.  When going to the store decide on a price per bottle and have a general idea of which wine you would like.  Leave the specifics to the salesperson.

Do you have unsightly brown spots on your face, hands or body?

SkinCeuticals (many of you use their skincare products) has developed a “pen” that uses cryotherapy or freezes age and sun spots as well as skin tags.  It uses carbon dioxide which freezes the superficial part of the skin at -79 degrees C.  The technique is similar to when family physicians and dermatologists use liquid nitrogen to treat skin cancers.

The procedure takes just a few minutes.  The area is cleansed then sprayed with CO2 to freeze the spot.  There is very little if any temporary discomfort.  Immediately after, Vitamin C is applied and so can makeup.  Vitamin C and a sunscreen are encouraged and should be applied while healing.

The lesion will get darker and possibly scab before it sheds.  It can take 7-21 days to shed completely.  Healthy pink skin or lightening of the dark spot will appear.  Maturation of the skin then follows the normal skin cycle of 6 weeks.
