    Migraines

Migraine is the most disabling neurological disease in the world among people under the age of 50. One in five women get them. Estrogen is one factor although not the only one. About 20% of patients get an aura before the migraine but the connection between the two is not understood.

Under diagnosis perpetuates patient suffering. The diagnosis includes a minimum of 5 attacks each lasting 4 to 72 hours. Each attack has to include two of the following: throbbing headache with pain that is moderate to severe, that worsens with activity, and is only on one side of the head. The migraine causes nausea or abhorring of sound or noise.

(Did You Know? Migraine sufferers have higher risks of heart attack, stroke, blood clots, and irregular heartbeats.)

No treatment works always. A new drug, Aimovig, is injected monthly but costs about $6,900/year. The most widely used drugs are a class called triptans, which help about 60% of patients. Electrical stimulation devices such as Cefaly and Spring TMS help some.

We have found that Botox helps some patients especially those where the pain comes from the temporal area. We have about 15-20 patients including two staff that receive Botox about every three months or when they start to feel the beginnings of their migraines.

Prevention involves a number of different measures. Avoid trigger foods such as caffeine, chocolate, cheese and MSG. Stay hydrated and don’t skip meals. Use fruit to stabilize blood sugar. Pay attention to hormonal changes. A study in Neurology showed that taking vitamin B2 reduced migraines. Establish a sleep routine. Lastly, and my favorite, stay active by exercising regularly.

    LA DOLCE VITA

Biking for recreation and exercise continues to grow. I get together with some guys on Saturday mornings to ride the Loveland Bike Trail before having breakfast at Paxton’s. Over the years I have found the store Performance Bike on Montgomery Road just south of Kenwood Towne Center to be helpful. It’s not just their large selection but the personal care and knowledge they have. If you go, tell Paul I sent you.

No general anesthesia is needed and downtime is limited in most cases to the day of treatment. 96% of patients were satisfied after two years.

    Facial Wrinkles?
Vollure is the newest filler for fine wrinkles. It doesn’t project as much as Juvederm but is smoother and lasts up to 18 months. Volbella is a lip filler that DOES NOT exaggerate the lips but improves wrinkles and creases in the lips and the skin just above the lips. Studies show it lasts for about a year. Come in and see what it has done for Diane, Crystal and Dianna. Voluma augments the cheeks and lifts some of the lower tissues.

    Permanent Makeup?
Micro-blading is a technique of applying permanent makeup to your eyebrows with individual strokes simulating individual hairs. We also do permanent eyeliner and lips.

    Lax Skin or Brown Spots?
Collagen Induction Therapy or microneedling reduces facial pigmentation and improves wrinkles.

Do you have unsightly brown spots on your face, hands or body?

SkinCeuticals (many of you use their skincare products) has developed a “pen” that uses cryotherapy or freezes age and sun spots as well as skin tags. It uses carbon dioxide which freezes the superficial part of the skin at -79 degrees C. The technique is similar to when family physicians and dermatologists use liquid nitrogen to treat skin cancers.

The procedure takes just a few minutes. The area is cleansed then sprayed with CO2 to freeze the spot. There is very little if any temporary discomfort. Immediately after, Vitamin C is applied and so can makeup. Vitamin C and a sunscreen are encouraged and should be applied while healing.

The lesion will get darker and possibly scab before it sheds. It can take 7-21 days to shed completely. Healthy pink skin or lightening of the dark spot will appear. Maturation of the skin then follows the normal skin cycle of 6 weeks.

If the spot is appropriate, we charge $150 for the first three spots then $30 for each thereafter.

    Pre-treatment One week three weeks

    Leg Veins?
Sclerotherapy improves spider veins in your legs.
