  • Healthy Nutrition Holiday Travel!

Sometime over the next month many of you will be flying.  While some airports have easy access, most of us will face hours of added time to the scheduled “flight time”.  Layovers and transfers are common too.  The point being, that almost certainly you will be faced with “What do I eat?” during your airplane travels.

Fortunately, many airports have improved selections and so have individual restaurants.  Some specific examples are gourmet sandwiches at Proof of Pudding in Atlanta’s airport, Saladworks at O’Hare in Chicago, CIBO Express at New York’s LaGuardia, and Legal Sea Foods at Boston’s Logan Airport.  Chains like Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts have healthy whole wheat sandwiches.  McDonald’s Premium Asian Salad with Grilled Chicken has 5 grams of fiber, 32 grams of protein and only 270 calories.

Watch out for those items that appear to be healthy but aren’t.  Au Bon Pain’s Roasted Vegetarian Wrap has 670 calories and McDonald’s Bacon, Cheese and Egg White Bagel has about the same amount of fat and calories as a Big Mac.

(Did You Know?   My favorite airport is in Atlanta’s Hartsfield International called One Flew South.  It has great food and an extensive wine list. It’s located at concourse E.)

Do it yourself.  Much like a picnic, pack yourself a sandwich or take along snacks such as cheese sticks, nuts, apples or bananas, protein bars or cut up vegetables.  Buy water after getting through security.

Food the airline serves can be tricky.  In general, sandwiches, salads, and other “meal” offerings are better than “snack boxes”.  When in doubt order a special meal.  Delta has 16 types of preorder special meals.
