  • Botox Day Tuesday July 21, Lyme Disease

Botox Day is Tuesday July 21 with discounts on Botox and fillers such as Juvederm.  Botox is $13/unit or $195/syringe (normally $16/unit and $240/syringe) and fillers are 10% off.  Voluma is an injectable filler that augments and lifts the cheeks.  Buy a syringe for each side and get half off the second side saving $400.

Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in the U.S.  There are an estimated 300,000 cases each year.  Most cases are in the Northeast, mid-Atlantic region, and north-central states including Minnesota (where a neighbor of mine contracted it) and Wisconsin.

It is transmitted by the deer tick.  Immature nymphs infect through their bites.  In general, they must be attached for at least 24 hours for the bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi, to be transmitted.  The appearance is sometimes a bull’s-eye rash.  Symptoms usually set in after a few days or as late as a month, including headache, fatigue, and fever.  It can spread to other body parts causing arthritis-like joint pain and inflammation, facial paralysis, an irregular heartbeat and cognitive difficulties.

(Did You Know?   Spa facials and waxing are two of our new services.  Take advantage of this for summer!)

When caught early enough, Lyme disease usually resolves after two to four weeks of treatment with antibiotics.  However, an estimated 10% of those infected will have persistent muscle and joint pain, fatigue, and cognitive difficulties for months or years.  Experts are not sure why this occurs but speculate that it is the result of residual damage of tissues caused by the disease.  Others feel that it is a post-infection complication to the immune system.
