Mark Twain once used the phrase “lies, damn lies, and statistics” to describe how the probability of something occurring can be manipulated whether it be winning an election, the number of people with health insurance or the odds of being bitten by a shark. For example, here are some odds of being bitten by a shark: 1 in 3.7 million, 1 in 11.5 million and 1 in 738 million. All are true but depend on the premise that is used to make the statement.
1 in 3.7 million is the lifetime risk that someone will die from a shark attack basing it on a lifespan of 77.6 years. The second is the rate of attacks in one year at 68 U.S. beaches. The third estimates the number of beach trips before a swimmer in California would be injured by a white shark.

The point being that it is important to be critical and analyze not only statistics but whatever information we receive especially by the media. Each source of information has its bias and understanding that allows us to better interpret the information. Medical papers are no exception to this although are reviewed mostly by scientists who are critical of methods.
So the next time someone says they have tried the latest diet, lotion to look younger or know a procedure that will improve your appearance over the weekend utter the phrase, “If it’s too good to be true it probably is”.
