Mused after reading the following article on Gratitude. If you remember a few months ago, I wrote an article on studies that show the best correlation to the success of an adult relationship (spouse, partner) is gratitude. Here’s what we can offer our children.
An Attitude of Gratitude in Young People
An online poll found that 59% of adults felt that most people are less likely to have an attitude of gratitude than 10-20 years ago and that 18-24 year olds express the least amount of gratitude regularly. Psychologist Richard Weissbourd from Harvard’s School of Education, sees it that parents have catered to their children’s needs to help them develop character when just the opposite has occurred. The children oftentimes have become entitled. The good news is that gratitude can be cultivated at any age.
Studies show that gratitude leads to less anxiety, less depression, and greater well-being. They also found that religious gratitude increases all of these benefits. Adolescents who expressed gratitude tend to be happier and more engaged in school. They have more prosocial behavior growth and stronger relationships with their peers.
Children need to “think” gratefully not just speak or write the words. As their parents, we need to stress and show our behavior of gratitude. The more consistent and the longer we show our children the proper ways of expressing gratitude the more likely they are to develop it as a habit. Specifically, explaining to our children the positives of what others do for us leads to their understanding of what gratitude represents.
Again, as in the previous article on gratitude, the place to start is a daily appreciation of what others in the family especially spouses and partners do for us.

LA DOLCE VITA
Fish in salt. Spoke with a restaurant chef in Miami at my recent meeting there. They had a whole salmon in salt. Take a whole fish, remove fins and tail combine egg whites, salt and any other spices (the one I saw uses tequila and chilies). Cover the fish with the mixture. Cook at 400 degrees for about 30-40 minutes depending on the size of the fish. Crack the salt shell and remove the meat taking care to leave the bones behind.
